The Rajya Sabha witnessed the unanimous passage of two crucial bills—Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2023—via a voice vote. The bills entail amendments to key laws in the Union Territory.
Amit Shah's critique of Congress:
Union Home Minister Amit Shah sharply criticized the Congress during his Rajya Sabha address after the Supreme Court validated the constitutionality of the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. Shah expressed frustration with the Congress's refusal to accept the court's decision, stating, "I can't explain to them what is the reality."
Shah asserted that Article 370 had fueled separatism, leading to a rise in terrorism. He urged a reconsideration of the Congress's stance, emphasizing that history and time validate the decision to abrogate Article 370.
Nehru's incomplete action on Jammu and Kashmir:
During his speech, Shah invoked India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, holding him responsible for the unresolved Kashmir issue. Shah criticized Nehru for leaving the accession of Jammu and Kashmir incomplete and questioned the need for Article 370.
Shah highlighted the government's efforts to combat terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir post the Article 370 abrogation. He claimed that the ecosystem of terror funding in the region had been dismantled, citing numerous arrests, terrorism finance cases, property seizures, and frozen bank accounts.The passage of the bills signifies a significant step in the legal and administrative framework of Jammu and Kashmir, aligning with the broader political and constitutional changes initiated in the region.
